"Letters": An Artistic Fusion of Memory and Earth

Last Updated 7/25/2024

What happens when art meets sustainability, and memories merge with the earth? You get "Letters," a unique multimedia art collaboration event that promises to be as memorable as the keepsakes you'll bring to transform. RenewAll Inc and Village Antiques & Art are excited to announce “Letters,” taking place on August 3rd, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Village Square Yard, 610 W. 14th Street, Huntington, WV.

To blend community, creativity, and sustainability, RenewAll and Village Antiques & Art have joined forces with talented local artists from Marshall University. This event provides a platform for artists to connect with the community, exhibit their talents, and support an environmentally friendly initiative. Aligning perfectly with RenewAll’s mission, "Letters" promotes sustainable art activities and fosters the professional growth of local artists.

Dive into "Letters"

“Letters" isn't just an art event; it’s a community experience designed to connect us through the art of creating soil. Spearheaded by artists Caleb Flood and Tacie Jones, this event invites you to bring any biodegradable object that holds a special memory—be it photographs, old letters, cards, or t-shirts. These items will be shredded and composted, allowing worms and microbes to transform them into rich soil.

This collective composting process symbolizes our shared memories and experiences, connecting us all through the earth. Once the composting is done, the soil will be repotted with a queen of the night flower (epiphyllum oxypetalum) into small earthen vessels for you to take home, providing a living memento of this communal artistic endeavor.

About the Artists

Tacie Jones is an interdisciplinary artist known for her work in video, performance, and media installation. Her art explores the relationship between embodied memory and the present moment, combining experimental media art, gender theory, trauma-informed recovery, and consciousness studies. With degrees from George Mason University, the Glasgow School of Art, and Virginia Tech, Tacie has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, receiving numerous grants and awards. She currently serves as Assistant Professor of New Media at Marshall University’s School of Art and Design.
Caleb Flood is a multifaceted artist and musician based in Richmond, VA. His work spans sound, sculpture, painting, and performance, focusing on the remediation of identity and embodiment. Caleb holds a BFA in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Creative Technologies from Virginia Tech. He has been actively involved in the music scene since 2005 and teaches sculpture, video, sound, and performance at VCU.
