Unveiling Tom Kromer: A Journey Through History in Central City

On July 16, 2024, the Central City Museum, powered by RenewAll, and the Marshall University English Dept. cohosted a captivating event, “Huntington’s Forgotten Son, Tom Kromer.” The event included an enlightening presentation by Dr. Stefan Schöberlein from Texas A&M-Central Texas, who brought the audience into the life and writings of modernist author and Huntington native, Tom Kromer (1906-1969).

Dr. Schöberlein’s talk painted a vivid picture of Kromer’s early life in the working-class neighborhoods of West Huntington, then known as Central City. Kromer, born on Washington Avenue, was a student of Huntington High School and Marshall University. His critically acclaimed novel about the Great Depression, “Waiting for Nothing,” has cemented his place in literary history, yet much of his life has remained shrouded in mystery—until now.

In front of an engaged audience of over 20 attendees, Dr. Schöberlein read short prose pieces by Kromer and shared excerpts from his forthcoming biography. The presentation was enriched with historical photographs, detailed maps of West Huntington and Central City, and newly uncovered facts about Kromer’s life and career. Attendees learned about the labor struggles in the local glass industry that influenced Kromer’s early years, his initial forays into publishing while at Huntington High, and the personal and familial dynamics that shaped his perspective.

The evening offered a unique glimpse into the past, illuminating not only the life of a significant literary figure but also the vibrant history of Central City. The audience left with a deeper appreciation for Kromer's contributions to literature and the rich cultural heritage of their own community. Dr. Schöberlein was also able to connect with people who were able to assist with his research on Kromer, as he still has many questions to answer as he works on Kromer’s biography.
