Last Updated 6/27/2025

Currently on exhibit in Gallery 610 through June 30th is featured the oil on canvas paintings by Larry Sumpter, a local artist living in Culloden, West Virginia. The solo exhibit titled, “Sun and Summer” showcases 12 of Larry’s most recent works rich in color, texture, and imagery. The exhibit opened on May 15th, and an Artist Reception was held on June 8th during the annual Old Central City Days!

This series of paintings depict landscapes, still-life, and portraiture. They take the viewer on a journey inside the images, drawing us to these places. For example, “Mediterranean Seaport” transports us to a villa overlooking the blue sea in the sun. Another, “Biking the High Roads,” features young boys bike riding through a tree-lined road, with sunlight filtering through the leaves (photographed right).

The simplicity of his still life is are depictions of the perfect table setting in summer. “Teatime” and “Flowers & Vase” show beautiful arrangements on tables bathed in sunlight. Another, “Boots” is a portrait of a young boy fishing in wading boots.

This collection of paintings is certainly worth a visit to the gallery. Gallery 610 is open 7 days a week, entering through the Village Antiques & Art building. If you’re interested in adding any of these paintings to your art collection, they are all available for purchase until the conclusion of the exhibit.

About the Artist

Growing up in Huntington, West Virginia Larry attended Huntington schools and graduated from Marshall University.

He developed an interest in painting during his early school days. Throughout those years, he learned about oil painting through observation, research, and the “trial and error” self-taught method. After retiring in 2008 from the business private sector, he made a serious effort to paint more and continue learning the craft.

About his work, Larry states, “I discovered, early on, that painting is like a journey to a destination that you never quite reach … but you keep striving to get there.”

He describes his painting style as a mixture of “impressionism” and “loose realism” and his favorite medium is oils, however, he also works with watercolors and acrylic paints.

Larry is a member of the Tri-State Arts Association, and a juried artisan at the Tamarack Convention Center in Beckley, West Virginia, and has exhibited there an average of three to four times a year. He also shows his work at the Heritage Farm and Museum located just outside of Huntington, West Virginia and has completed several murals at the farm. In addition, Larry painted the mural for the Central City Museum located on 14th St. W., Huntington.

Gallery 610 is a project of RenewAll Inc., located at 610 14th Street West (Central City historic district), Huntington WV. The gallery features both themed group exhibits as well as solo exhibitions.
