RECAP: RenewAll Inc. Welcomes Becky Borlan

Last Updated 3/25/2024

In March 2023, RenewAll Inc. and Huntington's Mayor's Council for the Arts embarked on an exciting journey by welcoming esteemed artist Becky Borlan to kick off a public art sculpture project which will be placed at the iconic Central City Gazebo. During Borlan's visit, she immersed herself in the soul of Huntington, drawing inspiration from its rich history and vibrant culture.

Artist Bio

Who is Becky Borlan? According to her website, "Baltimore-based Becky Borlan is a public artist who produces large-scale works that utilize light and color to spark reverence and wonder. Her installations are playful, vibrant, and whimsical. Applying the curiosity of a child to question everything, she dabbles with lots of different materials, she paints with the very expressive parts of color theory, and loops, bobs, weaves together forms to unite them into a concise and clear invitation to explore without judgment.

Becky has been working in public art since 2009, first as studio manager for artist Janet Echelman, creating city-scaled public art installations, then as a project manager for DC based artist Steven Weitzman, integrating aesthetic enhancements into transportation infrastructure. These foundational experiences encouraged her to pursue public art, particularly large-scale sculpture and suspended works."

Borlan Visits Central City Museum and More

During her stay, Borlan, accompanied by representatives from RenewAll, embarked on a tour of some of Huntington's most emblematic landmarks. Their itinerary included visits to the Central City Museum, West Edge Factory, 14th Street West District Shops, Gallery 610 at Village Antiques, and Marshall University's Visual Arts Center. Each stop offered Borlan unique insights into the city's past, present, and future, fueling her creative vision for the project.

Artist Reception

Borlan's visit concluded with a public engagement activity at Central City Gazebo Park. Here, community members gathered to share their perspectives on what defines Huntington. Borlan posed three thought-provoking questions: "What is the sound of Huntington? What is the color of Huntington? and What is the shape of Huntington?" These inquiries sparked lively discussions and gave Borlan input to shape her final design.

Engaging the Community

Against the backdrop of the newly renovated Central City Park, adorned with enhanced lighting, landscaping, and seating, Borlan's sculptures will stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of West Huntington. The evening was a celebration of art, community, and collaboration, highlighting the transformative power of public art in enriching the fabric of our city. Participants were also invited to pose as a sculpture, adding fun and excitement to this future project.

Looking Forward

Borlan shared that her design is expected to be completed by May, with installation slated for the end of 2024. As we eagerly await the final unveiling of Borlan's creation, we are reminded of the profound impact that art can have on our lives and communities. As we look to the future, we eagerly anticipate the continued evolution of the Central City Gazebo as a beacon of creativity and inspiration in the heart of Huntington.

RenewAll sponsors this public art installation after receiving a grant from T-MOBILE Hometown program and in partnership with the Mayor's Council for the Arts.
