As we step into the new year, RenewAll Inc. and Reuse Corridor are excited to introduce “ReUse Resolutions” - a collaboration aimed at helping you incorporate sustainable practices into your daily life. By making eco-friendly choices, you are contributing to a healthier planet while also supporting your local community. Read on to discover how these eight sustainable resolutions can make a positive impact on the environment. Use the graphic above to guide you (make sure to click the arrow to see page 2!) Spin the wheel to help you decide and to get inspired!

1. Purchase More Vintage Clothes

Embrace timeless fashion and reduce your carbon footprint by choosing vintage clothes! This resolution supports a circular economy, extending the life of clothing items and minimizing the environmental impact of the fast-fashion industry. Needing a place to start looking? Check out our local shops in Central City:

  • Village Antiques, 610 W. 14th Street

  • Peddler’s Mall, 800 W. 14th Street

2. Take your Cardboard to Goodwill Recycling

Make recycling a habit by taking your cardboard to Goodwill Recycling Center, located right here in West Huntington. This simple action ensures that materials are properly processed, contributing to waste reduction and resource conservation. The Recycling Center, located at 1005 Virginia Ave West in Huntington, makes it easy for tri-state residents to drop off their cardboard. The site is open to receive drop-offs from 10am-6pm on Monday-Saturday and 12pm-6pm on Sunday.

3. Sign up for Curbside Recycling in Huntington

Opt in for the convenience of curbside recycling and commit to separating and recycling your household waste. City of Huntington residents can sign up for curbside recycling for only $10 a month! Simply call Rumpke Waste & Recycling at 1-800-828-8171, Ext. 8755, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and tell the agent you want to sign up for the Huntington Recycles program. This is a great way to recycle all year long! Read more here

4. Upcycle

Turn something old into something new through upcycling, which reduces waste, conserves resources, and lets you get creative! Turn a soup can into a planter or an old tire into a flower bed. What will you come up with? Whether it is repurposing furniture or creating DIY projects, this resolution promotes resourcefulness and minimizes the need for new materials.

5. Patch Old Clothes

Patching clothes instead of ditching them promotes a circular economy where we use and reuse instead of wasting. It empowers individuals to take an active role in extending the lifespan of their clothes and reduces the demand for fast fashion. Simple stitches or iron-on patches can revive your favorite garments, reducing textile waste and encouraging a more mindful approach to fashion. Check out the video below for some inspiration!

6. Recycle Electronics

Have a bunch of defunct printers in your basement? Recycle their parts! You can take your electronic waste to Goodwill along with your cardboard for recycling, or you can follow the Cabell County Solid Waste Authority on Facebook to hear about their periodic e-waste recycling drives.

7. Buy Used Books

Buying used books diverts reading materials from the landfill and promotes caring for literature (you may even find beautiful and funny notes in the margins of your old book). By choosing used books, you support local businesses, conserve resources, and contribute to a sustainable book industry. Purchase used books at these local shops:

  • Hattie and Nan’s Antiques and Books, 521 W. 14th Street

  • Cicada Books & Coffee, 604 W. 14th Street

8. Follow Sustainability Influencers

Want to get into a reuse mindset but don’t know where to begin? Put your social media account to good use and get inspired by creators who are making recycled art, repairing clothes in creative ways, and showing off their vintage home decor. Try @wastefreeplanet, @cjreuse, and of course, @reusecorridor to start!

By incorporating these into your 2024 goals, you’re making a positive change for the environment and actively building a more sustainable community. Let’s make this year a time of conscious choices, small actions and collective impact. Join RenewAll Inc and ReUse Corridor in making a difference one resolution at a time!
