Renew the New Year!
#HappyNewYear!! As we step into the new year, RenewAll Inc. and the Appalachian Reuse Hub are excited to bring back our “ReUse Resolutions” - a collaboration aimed at helping you incorporate sustainable practices into your daily life for 2025. By making eco-friendly choices, you are contributing to a healthier planet while also supporting your local community. Check out the graphic and read on to discover how these eight sustainable resolutions can make a positive impact on the environment.
1. Shop Vintage
Buying eco-friendly practices, as it reduces the demand for new resources, lowers carbon emissions, and helps extend the lifespan of clothing items. Shop for vintage clothes at some of your favorite local shops:
- Village Antiques & Art, 610 W. 14th Street
- Peddler’s Mall, 800 W. 14th Street
2. Recycle Your Cardboard & Paper
Take your cardboard to Goodwill Recycling Center! The Recycling Center, located at 1005 Virginia Ave West in Huntington, makes it easy for tri-state residents to drop off their recycling. The site is open to receive drop-offs from 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday, Sunday 12pm-6pm.
3. Upcycle
Turn something old into something new through upcycling, which offers a wide range of environmental benefits such as reducing waste, conserving resources, minimizing energy consumption, and promoting creative, sustainable practices. Check out our throwback video of Kim Boley praticing a unique upcycling technique using old sheets and fabric!
4. Patch Your Clothes
Patching clothes instead of ditching them is a sustainable practice that reduces waste, conserves resources, lowers carbon emissions, and promotes a circular economy. It can empower individuals to take an active role in extending the lifespan of their clothes and reduce the demand for Fast Fashion.
5. Buy Used Books
Buying used books conserves resources, reduces energy consumption, lowers carbon emissions, and supports the cultural heritage of literature. Purchase used books at these local shops:
- Hattie and Nan’s Antiques and Books, 521 W. 14th Street
- Cicada Books & Coffee, 604 W. 14th Street
6. Buy Reclaimed Wood
The Appalachian Reuse Hub sells Reclaimed Wood at Village Antiques & Art, located at 610 W. 14th Street, Huntington, WV. Consider buying reclaimed wood for your next home DIY project or for small crafts. Looking for inspiration or have questions? Reach out to the Appalachian ReUse Hub directly today on FB!
7. Recycle Your Shoes
Beyond donating lightly used shoes to places like GoodWill, there are other ways to recycle shoes. If you’re a creative, turn your shoes into something new through upcycling. You can also contact organizations, like TerraCycle that make recycling your shoes as easy as sending in a box of the shoes to the company.
